Leh: The Central Government has approved the construction of the Leh Bypass (Southern Alignment) in the Union Territory of Ladakh at an estimated cost of ₹990.51 crore, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced on Wednesday.

Sharing the announcement on social media platform X, Gadkari said the project involves the construction of a two-lane highway with paved shoulders, stretching from National Highway-01 near Phyang village (HPCL Plant) to Upshi on the Leh-Manali Highway (NH-03).

The strategically important road project is aimed at decongesting Leh town by diverting through traffic away from the urban centre while creating a seamless alternative corridor connecting NH-01 and NH-03.

According to the Union Minister, the bypass will significantly improve the movement of vehicles by providing a faster, safer and more efficient route for both local commuters and long-distance traffic.

“The project entails the development of a two-lane highway with paved shoulders, extending from NH-01 near Phyang Village (HPCL Plant) to Upshi on the Leh-Manali Highway (NH-03),” Gadkari said.

He said the bypass would not only ease traffic congestion within Leh but also strengthen regional road connectivity and improve transportation efficiency across the Union Territory.

The project is expected to enhance road safety by reducing heavy vehicular movement through the town, thereby improving travel conditions for residents and visitors alike.

Officials believe the new bypass will also play a crucial role in supporting Ladakh’s growing tourism sector by facilitating smoother access to the region’s key destinations while reducing travel time for tourists and transport operators.

The highway is also expected to improve logistical connectivity and strengthen the road network linking Ladakh with the rest of the country, an important aspect given the region’s strategic location.

Gadkari said the project would contribute to Ladakh’s long-term economic development by improving connectivity, promoting tourism and facilitating the movement of goods and people.

The approval of the Leh Southern Bypass forms part of the Centre’s continued focus on strengthening road infrastructure in border and high-altitude regions to improve connectivity, enhance safety and support socio-economic development.
