Ganderbal, October 15: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said the government plans to promote Sonamarg as a year-round tourist destination, with rafting in summer and skiing, skating and other winter sports during colder months.
Speaking to reporters during his visit to Ganderbal, Omar said the tunnel has improved all-weather connectivity to Sonamarg. He added that he would work with Kangan MLA Mian Mehar Ali to further develop the tourist destination.
The Chief Minister said tourism projects sometimes face delays due to forest, environmental and wildlife clearances, but assured that all necessary procedures would be followed.
He said development projects worth around ₹60 crore had been inaugurated or had their foundation stones laid in Ganderbal.
Regarding the ₹40 crore bridge over the River Jhelum, Omar said test piling had been completed. The government aims to finish the pillars by April and the entire bridge by December next year.
He also inaugurated road projects, a new school building and infrastructure works at the Fruit and Vegetable Mandi. Traders’ demands for mandi expansion, a boundary wall and a grade separator have been discussed with NHAI officials.
On the demand for fencing the PDC canal following fatal incidents, Omar said the matter would be taken up with the concerned authorities. He also said Deputy Commissioner Shreya would examine pending compensation cases linked to National Highway projects.
Addressing traffic congestion along the Beehama–Kheer Bhawani road due to Chinar trees, the Chief Minister said a practical solution was needed to balance development and environmental protection. He suggested that some trees might be relocated through removal and replacement planting at suitable sites.
Omar also referred to the 70th National School Games 2026 in Gadoora, where students from across the country are participating in Wushu and Taekwondo competitions.
Reiterating the government’s position on land acquisition, he said all commitments made to affected families through signed agreements would be honoured.
