Srinagar, July 3: The transportation of sheep from Punjab to Jammu and Kashmir is expected to return to normal after livestock dealers called off their strike on Friday.
The decision came after assurances from the Punjab government that vehicles carrying livestock would not be stopped during transit. The government has also directed livestock markets to restart the supply of animals.
Although the strike has been withdrawn, the dealers said they are waiting for formal written orders before considering the matter fully resolved. They added that the implementation of the directions on the ground will be reviewed in the coming days.
The strike had continued for several days, disrupting the movement of sheep from Punjab to Kashmir and raising concerns over a possible shortage of mutton in the Valley, particularly during the ongoing wedding season.
The issue had also drawn the attention of the Jammu and Kashmir government, which took up the matter with the Punjab government after traders complained about difficulties in transporting livestock.
With the strike now over, the supply of sheep to Jammu and Kashmir is expected to resume smoothly in the coming days, easing fears of a mutton shortage.
