Srinagar, August 19: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Wednesday indicated that Washington may reconsider its current travel advisory for Jammu and Kashmir, while appreciating efforts by the central and Union Territory governments to improve security in the region.
Gor made the statement during his first standalone visit to Jammu and Kashmir in six years. His comments came in response to questions about whether the United States could lower its existing travel warning for the region.
At present, the US State Department has placed Jammu and Kashmir under a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory, with terrorism cited as a major security concern.
Speaking in Srinagar after meeting Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Gor said the United States reviews its travel warnings from time to time and would examine whether the advisory for Jammu and Kashmir could be relaxed.
He said no immediate announcement was being made, but the possibility of changing the current advisory would be considered during the review.
Gor also spoke positively about Jammu and Kashmir as a potential destination for American visitors, highlighting its natural beauty and the opportunities available in the region.
