APRIL 16: Justice BR Gavai will take over as Chief Justice of India on May 14.
It is learnt that he will succeed Justice Sanjeev Khanna, who will retire on May 13, to become the 52nd Chief Justice of India. In the current times, Justice Gavai holds the position of the senior-most judge in the Supreme Court.
Notably, President of India Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office.
Justice BR Gavai was born in 1960 in Amravati, Maharashtra and commenced his legal career in 1985.
Pertinent to mention, Justice Gavai was part of landmark verdict in January 2023 which backed Centre’s decision to demonetise currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000.
