In a decisive move to promote public safety and responsible pet ownership, the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh has officially banned six dog breeds identified as aggressive under the newly notified Pet and Community Dogs Bye-Laws, 2025.
The banned breeds include:
- American Pitbull
- American Bulldog
- Bull Terrier
- Cane Corso
- Dogo Argentino
- Rottweiler
The decision comes in response to rising concerns over incidents involving aggressive dog behavior in public spaces. The bye-laws aim to regulate pet ownership, ensure community safety, and establish clear guidelines for managing potentially dangerous breeds.
Key Provisions:
No new registrations will be allowed for the banned breeds.
Existing owners of these breeds are permitted to retain their pets, provided they register them with the municipal authority within a 45-day grace period.
The bye-laws also mandate leashing, muzzling, and proper training for all registered dogs to prevent public nuisance or harm.
Officials stated that the move aligns with national and international standards for urban pet management and reflects the city’s commitment to creating a safer and more harmonious environment for residents and animals alike.
