Srinagar records hottest June month in 47 years

Jammu: Even as Kashmir sizzles under an intense heatwave, the Jammu region experienced an unusual cool spell with temperatures dipping well below the seasonal average.

On Tuesday, Jammu city recorded a maximum temperature of just 29.0°C — around 7 degrees below normal — providing relief to residents amid the otherwise sweltering summer.

Scattered rainfall across the division added to the respite, with the Meteorological Department reporting 36.0 mm of rain at Jammu ARG, and 10.0 mm at Kathua ARG in the past 24 hours.

However, the MeT has issued a fresh advisory for the coming days, warning of fairly widespread light to moderate rain and thunderstorms from July 5 to July 7, accompanied by gusty winds and lightning. Vulnerable areas have been cautioned against possible flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones.

In stark contrast, the Kashmir Valley is witnessing record-breaking heat. Srinagar has recorded its hottest June in 47 years and the second hottest since observations began in 1892.

According to independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif Keng, Srinagar’s average maximum temperature for June 2025 stood at 31.0°C, with a mean minimum of 18.2°C, leading to an overall average temperature of 24.6°C. The only hotter June was in 1978, with an average of 25.0°C.

Qazigund, the gateway to the Valley, also experienced its warmest June in more than 50 years, clocking an average temperature of 23.2°C — matching its 1978 record.

On Tuesday, Srinagar remained hotter than most parts of Jammu with the mercury hitting 34.2°C, while Qazigund touched 32.6°C. Kupwara recorded 34.7°C, Pahalgam 30.0°C, Kokernag 32.4°C, and Gulmarg — the famed ski resort — remained relatively cool at 24.5°C.

The MeT Department has confirmed that both day and night temperatures across the Valley have remained 4–6°C above normal. Forecasts indicate hot and humid conditions in Kashmir until July 4, with a chance of isolated rain or thunderstorms. From July 5 onwards, more widespread rainfall is expected across both regions, with potential for intense downpours in parts of Jammu division.

Director MeT Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad said that from July 5 to 7, many places may experience moderate to heavy rainfall, which could trigger flash floods and increase water levels in rivers, streams, and local nallahs. The public is advised to stay alert, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

As temperatures continue to surge in the Valley and monsoon activity builds in the plains, authorities are urging residents and pilgrims alike to remain vigilant and follow daily weather updates, particularly in view of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra.
