Jammu: Health services at the Emergency Wing of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H), Bakshi Nagar, Jammu, were severely impacted on Wednesday after Postgraduate (PG) doctors suspended work in protest against the assault on two of their colleagues by relatives of a deceased patient.
Police have registered an FIR (No. 87/2025) under sections 132 and 121(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Bakshi Nagar Police Station. However, no arrests had been made till the filing of this report.
According to sources, chaos erupted at GMC&H following the death of a patient, Rajinder Kumar, son of Kewal Krishan from Reasi, who was undergoing treatment for a brain hemorrhage.
After his death, his relatives placed his body outside the Emergency Wing and raised slogans against the doctors, blaming them for alleged negligence.
Tensions escalated when family members entered into a heated argument with two on-duty PG doctors, Dr. Ayushi (ENT, SMGS Hospital) and Dr. Ruchika. The situation turned violent when the relatives allegedly assaulted both doctors.
In response, PG doctors collectively suspended their duties, prompting hospital authorities to deploy senior doctors to manage emergency services.
Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Principal, GMC Jammu, condemned the attack and presented video evidence showing the deceased’s relatives physically assaulting Dr. Ayushi.
He stressed that such incidents demoralize the medical community and disrupt crucial health services.
Providing details of the patient’s medical history, Dr. Gupta explained that Rajinder Kumar had been admitted to GMC Jammu on June 30, 2025, with a brain hemorrhage. He was later shifted to PGI Chandigarh on July 1 under the Leave Against Medical Advice (LAMA) clause due to his critical condition.
Doctors at PGI Chandigarh diagnosed him with “Poor Grade SAH” (Subarachnoid Hemorrhage) and advised the family to transfer him to a local hospital, citing a slow recovery. H
e was readmitted to GMC Jammu on July 11. On the day of the incident, a medical officer was examining the patient when his condition suddenly deteriorated, and he died during treatment.
The administration has assured that strict action will be taken against those involved in the assault, and the safety of healthcare professionals remains a top priority.
