Jammu: The Gujjar Bakerwal Students Alliance (GBSA) held a protest today against the ‘anti-reservation policies’ being implemented by Kashmir University.

The alliance voiced its concerns about the lack of representation for the Gujjar-Bakerwal community in key academic positions and admissions, alleging that the university’s policies have systematically marginalized local students from Jammu and Kashmir, particularly from the reserved categories.

The students expressed frustration over the exclusion of qualified candidates from the region, despite their achievements and credentials.

They claimed that the university continues to prioritize non-local candidates over local students, in direct violation of the reservation policies designed to uplift marginalized communities.

Protesters highlighted that while the government had pledged to prioritize domicile students for local jobs and educational opportunities, Kashmir University’s recruitment practices and admission policies have not been in line with these assurances.

The absence of community members in important academic roles within the university, such as professors and other faculty members, was also a major point of contention.

The GBSA members called for the university to adhere to the reservation policies and ensure equitable opportunities for the Gujjar-Bakerwal students.

They also demanded a transparent recruitment and admission process that reflects the true spirit of reservation and helps uplift marginalized communities.
