SAHIL BHAT
AUG 21: Following the directives of the Supreme Court, six Cops, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police, have been apprehended by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for the alleged torture of Police personnel during custody in Kupwara district in 2023.
It is learnt that CBI was directed to file an FIR into the alleged torture of a policeman in Kupwara.
Among the arrested Police personnel are Deputy Superintendent of Police Aijaz Ahmad Naikoo and Inspector Reyaz Ahmad, who are accused of torture of policeman Khursheed Ahmad Chouhan in February 2023.
In the previous month, the Top Court termed the touture of Chouhan as “Barbaric atrocity of Police” and took the J&K Police to task. It also said the Jammu and Kashmir High Court has committed grave mistake for failing to comply with law to perform a specific act and refrain from a particular action.
The Apex Court has said the handling of the case by the Jammu and Kashmir Police implies unconstitutional and uncivil behaviour.
A bench helmed by Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta apprised that the injuries caused to the constable during his illegal detention, especially the complete mutilation of his genitalia, indicates inhuman torture.
