Srinagar: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday spoke with the family of Jammu and Kashmir Police Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi, who was killed in a terrorist attack in Anantnag district earlier this week, and assured them of the government’s full support.

Shah spoke to the slain policeman’s son during the visit of BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Sunil Sharma, to Qureshi’s residence at Lalpora in Beerwah area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

Sharma, while sharing details of his visit, said the Union Home Minister personally conveyed condolences to the family and assured them that the government stands firmly with them during this difficult time.

“Visited the home of martyred Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi in Budgam to pay respects and offer heartfelt condolences to his family. Grateful to Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah Ji for personally speaking to the martyr’s son and assuring the family,” Sharma said in a post on social media.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also visited the residence of the martyr and expressed solidarity with the bereaved family. The LG paid heartfelt tributes to Head Constable Qureshi and said that the entire nation was proud of his courage, sacrifice and devotion to duty.

“Martyr’s ideals of love for duty and honour for the motherland will continue to inspire generations in building a peaceful and prosperous Union Territory,” LG Sinha said.

Assuring every possible assistance to the family, the Lieutenant Governor said the administration would stand with them and ensure their well-being and dignity. He also assured full support until Qureshi’s son completes his studies and becomes eligible for a compassionate government appointment.

LG Sinha said Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed significant progress in dismantling the terror ecosystem under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reiterated the administration’s resolve to eliminate terrorism from the Union Territory.

He appealed to the people, particularly the youth of Jammu and Kashmir, to draw inspiration from the martyr’s dedication and remain united in the fight against terrorism.

Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi was killed on July 22 after terrorists opened fire at him at Lal Chowk in Anantnag. Qureshi was deployed for security duties related to the ongoing Amarnath Yatra when he was targeted around 12:30 pm.

The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy outfit of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the attack through a social media post, according to officials.

The killing of the police personnel has drawn widespread condemnation, with security agencies intensifying operations to identify and neutralise those involved in the attack.
