77.96 km stretch to undergo survey at a cost of ₹12.59 Cr

SRINAGAR: In what is being seen as a significant boost to religious tourism and regional infrastructure, the Ministry of Railways has given the green signal for a Final Location Survey (FLS) of an additional new rail line between Jammu and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra — a project officials say could redefine connectivity to one of India’s most visited pilgrimage sites.
The new line, stretching 77.96 kilometers, will undergo a detailed route survey at an estimated cost of ₹12.59 crore.
Officials from the Northern Railway, which will conduct the survey, confirmed that the move is aimed at laying the groundwork for a future rail corridor designed to decongest existing routes and provide a more direct, efficient connection for pilgrims.
“The Final Location Survey is a critical step. It allows us to assess the terrain, feasibility, and alignment options before any construction begins,” a senior railway official involved with the project told The News Now. “This route has both devotional and developmental value.”
The survey was formally sanctioned by the Railway Board on July 14, 2025, following a request from Northern Railway. The cost will be drawn from the ‘Surveys’ budget under the policy formulation and research head of the Indian Railways’ expenditure plan.
Officials say the new alignment is not just about convenience for pilgrims, but also about long-term regional planning. “Apart from easing the burden on the current line to Katra, this new rail link will open up new possibilities for economic activity, tourism, and infrastructure growth across the Jammu region,” said another official familiar with the project file.
Another official said, “This additional new line is expected to significantly ease travel for the devotees visiting the revered Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, offering a more direct and efficient route. It also reflects the ongoing efforts by Indian Railways to expand and modernise its network nationwide, particularly in regions of high strategic and public importance.”
This initiative is designed not only to enhance pilgrimage and tourism but also to contribute to the economic growth and development of the Jammu region. This strategic project underscores Indian Railways’ commitment, he said.
