Jammu: Families of victims of the 2025 Chisoti cloudburst tragedy on Saturday met Jammu and Kashmir BJP president and Rajya Sabha member Sat Sharma and sought early issuance of death certificates for 33 persons who went missing in the disaster.
Families of victims of the devastating Chisoti cloudburst on Friday demanded justice, compensation and issuance of death certificates, alleging prolonged official inaction months after the tragedy that claimed several lives.
The cloudburst struck Chisoti village — the gateway to the Machail Mata temple in Kishtwar district — on August 14, 2025, killing 65 people, mostly pilgrims, while more than 30 persons are still missing.
The deputation, led by Rajesh Mehta, called on Sharma at the BJP headquarters here and submitted a memorandum highlighting the hardships faced due to the delay in completing legal formalities regarding the missing persons.
The families said the non-issuance of death certificates has caused severe emotional and financial distress, as they are unable to settle insurance claims and complete other essential legal documentation.
They told the BJP leadership that considerable time has elapsed since the devastating cloudburst and flash floods struck Chisoti in 2025, leaving little hope of survival of the missing persons, and urged the administration to take compassionate action in the matter.
Taking serious note of the issue, Sharma spoke to the divisional commissioner and the concerned deputy commissioner and asked them to initiate prompt action to provide relief to the affected families.
He stressed that the administration should address the matter as a priority and ensure that the victims’ families do not face further hardship.
