APRIL 2: On Wednesday, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju tabled the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025 in Lok Sabha for consideration.
While introducing the Waqf bill, Rijiju said Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) consultation process has been the busiest exercise by Parliamentary panel in Indian democracy.
Union Minority Affairs Minister emphasized the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) has received 97.27 lakh petitions and memorandums via different modes before finalizing the report.
Kiren Rijiju said a total of 284 delegations have expressed their opinions on the Waqf Bill besides the Waqf boards of 25 states and Union Territories.
He said, “Opposition has tried to mislead the people on certain issues that are not part of the Waqf Bill, this bill has no cords attached to religion, but inclined only to properties”
Pertinent to mention, the Waqf (Amendment) bill aims to ensure transparency and accountability by addressing umpteen complexities via technology-driven mode.
According to Waqf (Amendment) bill, Muslims practicing for at least five years can give their property to Waqf. The bill has special provisions for widows, orphans and divorced women as they can receive their inheritance before Waqf declaration.
