Jammu, November 2: The Omar Abdullah-led government in Jammu and Kashmir is reportedly facing political uncertainty after 25 disgruntled National Conference (NC) legislators allegedly issued a 14-day ultimatum to the party leadership, seeking major changes in the government.
According to sources, the legislators have warned that they may approach Raj Bhavan and withdraw their support to the government if their demands are not addressed within the given timeframe.
Among their key demands is the removal of all serving ministers from the Cabinet, along with the immediate removal of the Chief Minister’s Advisor. They have also called for the formation of an entirely new Council of Ministers after consulting all members of the NC Legislature Party.
The dissatisfied legislators reportedly want ministerial positions to be assigned on merit and insist that major government decisions should not be taken by a select group of leaders without consulting other elected representatives.
The group has also urged the government to fulfil the promises made in its election manifesto. They have specifically called for the restoration of Article 370 and Article 35A, along with other constitutional safeguards, to be strongly pursued with the Central Government.
Sources indicate that the legislators may march towards Raj Bhavan and announce their withdrawal of support if no concrete steps are taken within 14 days.
The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly has a total strength of 90 members, while the National Conference is reported to have 41 MLAs. If all 25 legislators withdraw their support, it could raise questions over the government’s majority in the Assembly and create serious political uncertainty.
The latest developments have put the NC leadership under pressure to address the concerns of its dissatisfied legislators, resolve internal differences and prevent the situation from escalating into a major political crisis.
However, the reported demands and proposed withdrawal of support have yet to be formally confirmed by the legislators or the party leadership.
