Srinagar, August 17: Jammu and Kashmir Congress president Tariq Karra has accused the BJP of trying to divert public attention from growing concerns among students and young people by making the Vande Mataram issue a political controversy.
Karra said the Congress had already clarified its position on the matter and rejected the BJP’s allegation that the party had disrespected the national song.
According to Karra, the Congress does not accept the particular version of Vande Mataram that was used during the controversy. He termed it a “twisted” rendition and said the party had made its objection clear.
“There is nothing to be disrespected. However, by mistake, they used a version that the Congress did not accept,” Karra said.
He alleged that the BJP was facing growing anger across the country, especially among students and young people over issues related to examinations and other matters affecting their future.
Karra said the Vande Mataram controversy was being used to shift the focus away from these issues.
He further alleged that the BJP’s protest reflected frustration and said the Congress had filed a complaint over the manner in which the party was targeted.
“There can be a procession or a protest. But we have lodged a complaint against the way they have attacked,” he said.
Karra said the youth and students in different parts of the country were unhappy over issues concerning their education and future, and alleged that the BJP was attempting to divert attention from their concerns.
