Jammu: The Central University of Jammu is currently at the center of a grave legal investigation following the formal registration of a criminal case against one of its faculty members. On May 13, 2026, Dr. Kailash Kumar (name changed), a Professor at the university, lodged a written complaint at the Channi Himmat Police Station against Assistant Professor Tanuj Kumar. The complaint alleges the repeated sexual harassment of Dr. Kumar’s minor daughter, an accusation that has sent shockwaves through the institution.
Following a detailed preliminary inquiry, law enforcement determined that the allegations were prima facie true. This conclusion was reached after reviewing statements from the complainant, various witnesses, and a professional counseling statement from the child.
The police have officially invoked stringent legal provisions against the accused which includes POCSO Act (Sections 7/8): Charges relating to sexual assault and punishment for the same and Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (Section 75): Charges specifically addressing sexual harassment.
The complaint reveals a disturbing pattern of behavior beginning as early as May 28, 2024, when the minor first reported inappropriate contact. Despite an initial admission of guilt by the accused and a plea for forgiveness in April 2026, the investigation found that the harassment did not cease.
The situation reportedly escalated on May 6, 2026, when Tanuj Kumar allegedly followed the child and her mother after they visited a local temple at Sainik Colony. During this encounter, he is accused of repeating the inappropriate physical contact and taunting the child to inform her father, explicitly stating, “ab apnebaap ko yeh bata”.
”The case against the Assistant Professor is bolstered by significant multimedia evidence. The complainant possesses recordings of the accused admitting to his actions during previous confrontations. Footage from the complainant’s residence is expected to play a key role in the upcoming trial. The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has provided a statement from the minor that supports the charges of sexual harassment.During the inquiry, it surfaced that the accused had previously attempted to justify his actions as a result of “office rivalry and personal grudge” against his colleague, Dr. Kumar. This admission of a retaliatory motive has been integrated into the official findings”, said a police officer.
