Vigilance renewed , fresh directives issued fresh to take stricter action

Vikram Sharma

JAMMU: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has intensified its crackdown on the use of banned polythene bags in the city.

Following strict instructions from Corporation Commissioner Dr. Devansh Yadav, recently three teams have been mobilized across different city zones to take swift action. These health wing teams, operating under the supervision of designated sanitary officers, have resumed their campaign against polythene bags that do not meet the legal thickness standard.

In Zone-2 few days back, the municipal team conducted inspections in areas including Top Sherkhaniya, Canal Road, Mutti, Barnai, and Akhnoor Road. The operation was led by Sanitary Officer Ramesh Wazir, with support from Sanitary Inspector Anoop Sharma, Bansi Lal, and supervisors Rahul and Vicky. During the drive, the team seized 10 instances of banned polythene, which were immediately destroyed. A total fine of Rs 10,200 was imposed on violators. Additionally, street vendors and shopkeepers were cautioned against using or selling illegal plastic carry bags.

Simultaneously, another team conducted a similar anti-polythene campaign in the Jewel area under Zone-1. This drive resulted in penalties amounting to Rs 5,000. The JMC emphasized the importance of compliance with national plastic regulations and reiterated that traders must ensure polythene bags in use are not thinner than 120 microns.

Health Officer Dr. Vinod Sharma reaffirmed the corporation’s ongoing commitment to curbing plastic pollution. He highlighted that the use, sale, manufacture, and storage of plastic carry bags under 120 microns in thickness has been banned across India since December 31, 2022. This regulation aims to reduce environmental harm caused by single-use plastics, which are a major contributor to urban waste and pollution.

Dr. Sharma noted that despite previous enforcement, reports have emerged indicating the resurgence of illegal polythene usage in some areas. In response, the JMC has renewed its vigilance and issued fresh directives to all teams to take stricter action. The municipal body is urging all traders and residents to cooperate with the rules to ensure a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

With renewed momentum, the Jammu Municipal Corporation is determined to enforce the plastic ban rigorously, sending a strong message against environmental negligence and promoting responsible civic behavior.
