New Delhi, August 5: The Centre is considering convening a special session of Parliament later this month to make another attempt at passing the Constitution Amendment Bills related to delimitation and women’s reservation, sources said on Wednesday.
According to sources, the government is planning a three-day special session beginning August 17, shortly after the conclusion of the Monsoon Session, which is scheduled to end on August 13. However, Parliament may not be formally prorogued, allowing it to be reconvened at short notice if required.
Sources said the government is working to secure the two-thirds majority required to pass the Constitutional Amendment Bills. The special session is expected to be called once sufficient support from members is ensured.
This would be the government’s second attempt to pass the legislation. Earlier, in April this year, it could not muster the required numbers to clear the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026.
The proposed legislation aims to redraw the distribution of Lok Sabha seats based on the 2011 Census, a move intended to facilitate the implementation of women’s reservation in Parliament.
