Jammu: After enduring a scorching day with the mercury touching 43.6°C, Jammu city—the hottest spot in the Union Territory on Thursday—finally saw a mild evening shower, offering temporary relief from the relentless heatwave.

The unexpected rain provided some comfort to residents reeling under the oppressive weather.

Despite this, the Meteorological Department (MeT) has maintained its heatwave advisory for several parts of Jammu and Kashmir, urging people to take necessary precautions.

Earlier in the day, several areas in the Jammu division recorded sweltering temperatures: Katra reached 39.5°C, Batote 31.6°C, Banihal 31.8°C, and Bhadarwah 30.8°C. The minimum temperature in Jammu stood at 31.0°C, making the night unusually warm and uncomfortable. Other night temperatures included Katra (27.6°C), Batote (19.5°C), Banihal (17.8°C), and Bhadarwah (16.9°C).

In the Kashmir Valley, although the weather was slightly milder, the temperatures remained above normal. Srinagar registered 32.4°C, Qazigund 32.8°C, Kupwara 31.9°C, Kukernag 31.8°C, and Pahalgam 28.2°C. The hill resort of Gulmarg remained the coolest in the region at 23.0°C. Night temperatures ranged from 19.0°C in Srinagar to a pleasant 11.8°C in Pahalgam.

According to the MeT’s extended forecast, light showers or gusty winds may continue at isolated places on June 14 to 16. From June 17 to 20, the weather is expected to remain largely hot and dry, before a likely shift between June 21 and 23, when cloudy skies and widespread thundershowers are predicted.

In its advisory, the MeT has urged citizens to avoid outdoor exposure between 12 noon and 4 PM, stay hydrated, and take precautions against heatstroke. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and outdoor workers, have been advised to take special care.

Farmers, meanwhile, have been encouraged to continue regular farm operations, as the dry spell is expected to support ongoing agricultural activities.

As the region braces for more intense heat in the coming days, the authorities have called on the public to remain cautious and adhere to health advisories.
