Bandipora, July 6: Buthoo village in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, renowned for cultivating premium spring onions, an essential ingredient in traditional Kashmiri Wazwan, is facing a difficult season as erratic weather has severely affected the crop.
Known for their distinctive taste and superior quality, Buthoo’s spring onions owe their reputation to the area’s fertile soil and favourable climatic conditions, making them highly sought after across the Valley.
This year, however, unpredictable weather has adversely impacted both the yield and quality of the crop, leaving farmers worried about mounting losses and the future of their livelihoods.
Growers have urged the government to introduce measures to minimise weather-related damage and provide timely assistance to affected farmers. They have also called for institutional support to strengthen the marketing and branding of Buthoo’s spring onions, besides facilitating their export to markets across India and abroad.
Farmers believe that improved market access and export opportunities would not only ensure better returns for their produce but also help preserve the village’s long-standing reputation for producing one of Kashmir’s finest spring onion varieties.
