Proposes one-minute silence, continuation of work as a more respectful tribute

WAJAHAT SHABIR

Srinagar: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday proposed that the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly should revisit its traditional way of holding condolence references for departed personalities, suggesting a more dignified and time-efficient method similar to the one followed in Parliament.

Speaking in the House, Omar Abdullah recalled the long political journey of a recently deceased leader, noting that the veteran had remained active in politics from the time of the Maharaja till recent years. “It’s not that we didn’t know him — he was 90 years old and remained connected to political life for decades. I only meant to say that since he was active till recently, I apologize if my words sounded otherwise,” Omar said.

He expressed concern that in recent times, proper expressions of condolence or acknowledgment had not been made for such figures. “We shouldn’t take this lightly,” he said, urging that “from some quarters, there should definitely be an appropriate expression.”

Reflecting on his experience as a Member of Parliament, Omar Abdullah said that earlier, condolence references used to involve multiple members speaking for several minutes, after which the House would adjourn for the day. “Later, it was felt that this was not the best use of Parliament’s time. A new procedure was introduced — the Secretary would read the names, members would observe one minute of silence, and then continue with the day’s business unless a sitting member had passed away,” he explained.

Suggesting a similar approach for the J&K Assembly, Omar said, “Why don’t we also follow that system? Sometimes when many people speak, even with good intentions, politics creeps in. We politicians have a bad habit — we end up bringing politics into everything.”

He proposed that the Speaker alone should read the reference, members observe a minute’s silence, and then proceed with the day’s scheduled business. “That would be a more meaningful tribute — to continue our work while remembering them with respect,” he said.

Concluding his remarks, Omar Abdullah, on behalf of his party, colleagues, and the House, extended heartfelt condolences to the departed souls. “That’s all from my side, sir,” he said.
