Jammu: A large-scale protest was organized by the auto and e-rickshaw unions at the Warehouse area of Jammu against the government’s recent decision to fix the fare at ₹10 per kilometer.
The protest, spearheaded by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Auto Union and other local unions, witnessed participation from hundreds of drivers voicing their discontent.
The protest began at the Warehouse area and extended through Vikram Chowk and towards Raj Bhavan, creating significant disruptions in the city. Chanting slogans and holding banners, the participants demanded a rollback of the fare regulation, which they claimed was unfair and impractical for their livelihood.
The police were deployed in large numbers to manage the situation and prevent any escalation. Despite efforts to maintain peace, the protest gained momentum as the participants refused to back down, alleging that their concerns were being ignored by the authorities.
“We have been struggling to make ends meet. The decision to fix the fare at ₹10 per kilometer is unacceptable and will severely impact our livelihood. We urge the government to reconsider this decision,” said a protester.
The unions accused the transport commissioner of not consulting them before implementing the decision and demanded immediate discussions to address their grievances. While the protest was initially intended to remain peaceful, tensions escalated as the police attempted to control the gathering.
The protest has drawn mixed reactions from the public, with some supporting the drivers’ demands and others urging for a balanced resolution that ensures fair treatment for both commuters and transport operators.
The unions have vowed to continue their agitation until their demands are met. The government is yet to release an official statement addressing the concerns raised during the protest.
