SRINAGAR, Jul 1: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti called on the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan to revive bilateral talks, saying that renewed engagement between the two countries could pave the way for peace, help address the Jammu and Kashmir issue and create better economic opportunities for the region.
Addressing reporters in Srinagar, Mufti said the current global environment highlights the importance of diplomacy over conflict. Referring to Iran’s strategic location and the Strait of Hormuz, she said geography can significantly influence international affairs and that Jammu and Kashmir also holds strategic importance.
She said the challenges facing Jammu and Kashmir are becoming more serious with time and their impact is not limited to the Union Territory alone but is being felt across the country.
According to Mufti, lasting solutions cannot be achieved through confrontation. Instead, she said, India and Pakistan should return to the path of dialogue to resolve their differences peacefully.
She maintained that improved relations between the two neighbours would not only contribute to regional peace and stability but would also support economic development and benefit the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
