Jammu: The mysterious death of BSF jawan Sepoy Jasvinder Singh has triggered protests and raised serious allegations of custodial violence, even as the soldier was cremated with full honours in R.S. Pura after authorities assured action.

The controversy stems from the jawan’s death in Amritsar, where he was reportedly being questioned by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in connection with an ongoing case. Police officials claimed that his health suddenly deteriorated during interrogation, leading to his death.

However, the family has strongly disputed the official version, alleging that Jasvinder Singh was beaten to death in custody. His mother, Gurmeet Kaur, claimed he was assaulted with belts and shoes, terming the incident a clear case of custodial violence. The family also alleged that he was picked up while on leave and taken to Amritsar without proper information.

The incident sparked outrage, with protests first erupting in Amritsar and later in his native area of R.S. Pura in Jammu, where locals and Sikh organizations rallied in support of the bereaved family.

On Sunday, a large protest was held at Daljeet Chowk, R.S. Pura, in Jammu, where family members, community leaders, and Sikh organizations demanded a fair and independent probe. DGPC member Ranjit Singh Tora and other representatives participated in the demonstration.

Authorities, including police and civil officials, engaged with the protesters and assured appropriate action. Following this, the protest ended peacefully around 2:45 PM, and normalcy was restored.

Meanwhile, the case has drawn attention from the Punjab Human Rights Organisation (PHRO), which termed the death “suspicious” and raised concerns over possible custodial torture. The organisation has demanded a judicial inquiry under a High Court judge, videography of the post-mortem, and action against those responsible if foul play is established.

Later in the evening, the mortal remains of Sepoy Jasvinder Singh, son of Late Avtar Singh, were cremated at New Diwangarh cremation ground, Chakroi (R.S. Pura) at around 4:45 PM with full Guard of Honour by 60 Battalion BSF. Senior officers and a large number of locals were present to pay their last respects.

Authorities stated that the matter is under investigation, and further action will be taken based on the findings, even as demands for justice continue to grow louder.
