Srinagar: Member of Parliament and Awami Itihad Party (AIP) chief Abdul Rashid Sheikh aka Engineer Rashid will go on hunger strike in Tihar jail from Friday to protest for not being allowed to attend the Parliament proceedings scheduled to begin from January 31.
Talking to media persons here the AIP vice president Advocate G N Shaheen said that Engineer Rashid will go on indefinite hunger strike from Friday.
“Er Rashid is going on a hunger strike from tomorrow in Tihar Jail. In solidarity with him we have also decided to go on a hunger strike in Srinagar, Jammu and Delhi,” Shaheen said. “ We have sought permission for holding a hunger strike in Srinagar’s Pratap park.”
It is also learnt that Engineer Rashid has also written to Lok Sabha Speaker about his plan to go on hunger strike from tomorrow.
Engineer Rashid has been lodged in Tihar jail since 2019 after the NIA arrested him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in the 2017 terror funding case. However, he was granted interim bail on September 10, 2024 for campaigning in the Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir.
Rashid the founder of AIP surrendered on to Tihar jail authorities on expiry of his interim bail on October 28, 2024.
Jailed Engineer Rashid, defeated Omar Abdullah in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency.
