SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir has achieved near-complete implementation of projects sanctioned under the Centre’s flagship Smart Cities Mission, with over 97 per cent of works completed across Srinagar and Jammu, official data tabled in Parliament reveals.
According to the reply to Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 199, as on January 15, 2026, a total of 288 projects worth ₹6,603 crore were taken up in Jammu and Kashmir under the Smart Cities Mission. Of these, 281 projects involving an expenditure of ₹6,464 crore have been completed, while only seven projects costing ₹140 crore remain ongoing.
The Union Territory has so far claimed ₹941 crore as Central assistance, of which ₹885 crore has already been utilised, reflecting a high fund utilisation rate, the data shows.
Srinagar emerges as the major beneficiary under the Mission, accounting for a significant share of projects and investment. The city implemented 161 projects worth ₹3,634 crore, with 156 projects costing ₹3,524 crore already completed. Only five projects with a combined cost of ₹111 crore are currently under execution in the summer capital .
In Jammu, 127 projects amounting to ₹2,969 crore were approved under the Mission. Of these, 125 projects worth ₹2,940 crore have been completed, leaving just two projects costing ₹29 crore in the ongoing stage.
The figures place Jammu and Kashmir among the better-performing States and Union Territories in terms of project completion under the ten-year Smart Cities Mission, which focused on urban infrastructure, public services, mobility, surveillance, water management and digital governance.
The Smart Cities Mission, launched in 2015, is now nearing closure nationwide, with most States and UTs reporting completion of the bulk of sanctioned projects, as per the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
