The President of India has officially approved the appointment of Justice Surya Kant as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will assume office on November 24, 2025, succeeding Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who is set to retire.
Justice Surya Kant, currently serving as a senior judge in the Supreme Court, is known for his progressive judgments and commitment to judicial reform. His elevation follows the recommendation of the outgoing CJI, in accordance with established constitutional procedure.
