Srinagar: Eight traditional handicraft products from Ladakh have been awarded Geographical Indication (GI) tags, marking a major boost for the protection and promotion of the union Territory’s indigenous crafts and cultural heritage.
Officials said the newly registered GI-tagged products include – Ladakh Challi Textiles, Ladakh Thigma, Ladakh Painting, Pabu of Ladakh, Ladakh Nambu Textile, Ladakh Pashmina Textile, Ladakh Chilling Metal Work and Ladakh Likir Pottery.
The granting of GI tag would further strengthen Ladakh’s position as a repository of rich indigenous knowledge, craftsmanship and centuries-old cultural traditions.
The recognition marks a major achievement in safeguarding Ladakh’s traditional crafts and artistic expressions while enhancing their visibility in national and international markets. GI registration provides legal protection to products linked to a specific geographical region and acknowledges the distinctive qualities, reputation and cultural significance associated with their place of origin.
“The conferment of GI status on these eight traditional Ladakhi products is a matter of immense pride for the people of Ladakh. These recognitions are not merely certifications; they are a tribute to the centuries-old craftsmanship, artistry, and cultural heritage of our people. Each product embodies the creativity of our artisans, and the unique identity of Ladakh. The GI tag will ensure global recognition, authenticity, and protection for our artisans, empowering them with rightful economic opportunities while safeguarding Ladakh’s unique traditions,” Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena said.
The newly GI-tagged products represent diverse facets of Ladakhi life, culture and craftsmanship. The Lieutenant Governor lauded the skills and dedication of artisans, cooperatives, and cultural custodians whose skills, dedication and tireless efforts have brought this honour to Ladakh.
The latest registrations add to Ladakh’s growing portfolio of GI-tagged products. Earlier, Raktsey Karpo Apricot, Ladakh Pashmina, Shing-Skos (woodcarving) and Sea Buckthorn had received GI recognition, highlighting the exceptional quality and uniqueness of Ladakh’s agricultural and artisanal products.
