January: Hundreds of residents gathered at Kishtwar’s Chowgan Ground to protest against the lack of free electricity in the region, launching the “Kishtwar Mission Bijli Free.”
The protest highlighted the need for immediate government intervention to provide free electricity, considering the environmental and social impacts of ongoing power projects in the district.
Speakers at the protest emphasized that Kishtwar, home to seven power projects with a combined capacity of 6,000 MW, has suffered significant environmental damage, including deforestation, drying rivers, and the disruption of aquatic life. They argued that the residents, who bear the brunt of these projects, deserve free electricity as a basic right.
The protest also criticized the inadequate development of infrastructure in Kishtwar, such as poor roads, lack of quality education, and insufficient healthcare facilities. Protesters called for better utilization of the revenue generated by power projects to improve local amenities and uplift the community.
Key speakers highlighted the collective nature of the movement, transcending religious and political divides. They urged the government to address the legitimate demands of the people and emphasized the importance of unity among residents. The formation of a committee to spearhead the movement was also proposed during the event.
The protesters expressed gratitude to the media for covering the event and amplifying their voices, urging continuous support to ensure the success of the movement. The leaders vowed to continue their struggle until the demand for free electricity is met, with hopes that the government will take decisive action.
“This is not the mission of an individual, a political party, or a specific community; it is a mission for all of Kishtwar. Free electricity is our right, and we will not rest until it is granted,” said one of the key speakers.
