Leh:  Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Friday inaugurated a Sound and Light Show at the historic Leh Palace, aimed at promoting cultural and heritage tourism in the Union territory.
The project, implemented by India Tourism Development Corporation under the Ministry of Tourism, has been executed for Rs 8.57 crore, officials said.

The Sound and Light Show showcases Ladakh’s rich cultural, historical and architectural legacy through modern multimedia techniques, enhancing visitor engagement while maintaining the sanctity of the monument protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, they added.

Speaking on the occasion, Shekhawat said Ladakh, particularly Leh, holds immense tourism potential and is witnessing a new phase of development under the leadership of Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.

The minister for tourism and culture said the initiative would help bring the region’s rich history, including that of the Namgyal dynasty, to life and connect tourists with its heritage.

Describing Ladakh as a land of centuries-old civilisation, the minister said spirituality, culture, art and natural beauty coexist in the region.

He lauded the efforts of the Ministry of Culture and ASI in preserving and promoting heritage for future generations.

Saxena said the project marks a step towards sustainable cultural tourism and would enable visitors to better understand the region’s historical and cultural legacy.

He added that the initiative would also promote night-time tourism, creating opportunities for local guides, artists and businesses, thereby contributing to employment generation and economic growth.

The L-G said the Centre, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has prioritised Ladakh’s development since it became a Union territory, with focus on infrastructure as well as preservation of cultural heritage.

He said sustained efforts are being made to position Ladakh as a major global tourist destination while ensuring a world-class experience for visitors.

Built in the 17th century by King Sengge Namgyal, Leh Palace served as the residence of the Namgyal dynasty and the administrative and ceremonial hub of the region. Over time, it has stood as a symbol of Ladakh’s political, cultural and spiritual evolution.
