JAMMU: It was supposed to be the beginning of a beautiful chapter. On June 25, 2024, against the breathtaking backdrop of the Dal Lake at the SKICC in Srinagar, Arooba (name changed )of Old Barzulla wed Syed Lal Hussain. Handshakes were exchanged, promises of a bright future in Canada were made, and a young woman trusted her new family with her life.

But according to harrowing police documents, that fairytale disintegrated within days, replaced by a waking nightmare of relentless cruelty, alcohol-fueled violence, and unspeakable betrayal that ultimately drove her to the brink of death.

Yesterday, the legal machinery finally ground into motion as the Janipur Police Station in Jammu officially registered a formal case (FIR No. 67/2026), taking over a “Zero FIR” originally initiated in Srinagar. The charges, filed under Sections 74, 75, and 86 of the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), paint a chilling picture of domestic violence, dowry harassment, and sexual misconduct.

According to the complainant, the abuse began almost immediately after the wedding. Her husband—who currently resides in Canada—allegedly began physically assaulting her while under the influence of alcohol, weaponizing demands for dowry.

The nightmare only intensified when the couple moved to the matrimonial family residence at Bhawani Nagar in the Janipur area of Jammu. Arooba alleged that she was subjected to severe sexual harassment by her own father-in-law. The trauma deepened when a maternal uncle of her husband  allegedly entered the home intoxicated, making lewd, sexually explicit remarks and attempting to outrage her modesty.

When her husband boarded a flight back to Canada on August 5, 2024, he left Arooba behind with a promise: he would complete the necessary paperwork and bring her abroad soon. Instead, police sources reveal, he left her trapped. In his absence, the psychological and physical torment by the in-laws reportedly continued unabated.

For months, Arooba bore the heavy weight of isolation and abuse. By autumn, the continuous trauma became too much for a human soul to carry. On October 8, 2024, feeling entirely forsaken, Arooba attempted to end her own life.

She survived, waking up in a hospital bed at the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, where she was treated for the physical injuries of her despair. The emotional scars, however, remained wide open.

Returning to her parental roots in Kashmir, Arooba sought help. A preliminary inquiry conducted by the Saddar Police Station in Srinagar found her allegations deeply credible. Recognizing that a prima facie cognizable offense had occurred, but noting that the geographical jurisdiction lay in Jammu, the Srinagar police took the crucial step of registering a ‘Zero FIR’ before forwarding the case files under Section 173(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

Now back in the jurisdiction where the abuse allegedly occurred, the Janipur Police have initiated a full-scale investigation.

As the investigation begins, a young woman from Barzulla sits waiting—not for a flight to Canada, and no longer for the husband who abandoned her—but for the simple, heavy weight of justice to finally balance the scales.
