JAMMU, 15 Feb: On the row when Speaker of J&K Legislative Assembly, Abdul Rahim Rather, called on CM Omar Abdullah to discuss the upcoming Budget session, People’s Conference chief Sajad Lone said sanctity of legislature has been degraded as Speaker called on CM Omar Abdullah.
Lone’s criticism came following Omar Abdullah posted on X, “Hon’ble Speaker, Shri Abdul Rahim Rather, called on me to discuss the upcoming budget session, its schedule, and key legislative business. Looking forward to a productive budget session focused on J&K’s growth and development.”
Taking to X, Lone said, “This is disgrace to the post of Speaker. Why should speaker go to CM to dicuss legislative business. Speaker is the highest authority in legislature and it doesn’t behoove him to go to CM office to discuss legislative It is insult to the sanctity of legislature as well as people of J&K who have chosen MLAs Shameful, CM omar Abdullah’s office has tweeted about it And Rather sahib is sitting like a good boy in front of a good boy. What a shame.”
He also said, in early years of Independence of India, a defining moment took place in its Parliamentary History. PM Jawahar Lal Nehru urgently wanted to discuss the official matter with the speaker GV Mavalankar in his Parliament House Office. Nehru sent a slip requesting Mavalankar to meet him in his room. The speaker returned it to Nehru writing on the same page indicating that as per traditions PM calls on the Speaker and not the other way round. Nehru scribbled back – “I am sorry, I am coming”
“There is another version of this incident when Mavalankar wanted to meet Nehru in his room to talk about an official matter, Nehru responded, saying convention warranted him to visit Speaker in his chamber and reached there”
“You should choose to go by either of these versions” Lone said to Omar.
