Reiterates demand for special status, statehood

WAJAHAT SHABIR

SRINAGAR: The Working Committee of the National Conference, which met here on November 27 and 28th unanimously adopted seven resolutions addressing political, security and social issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir.

In its first resolution, the Working Committee unanimously reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. The Committee reiterated that this issue is central to the aspirations and dignity of the people and must be addressed without further delay. The party resolved to continue its principled fight for the full restoration of special status.

In another resolution, the Working Committee urged the Government of India to immediately restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, stating that this commitment had been made on the floor of Parliament, repeatedly affirmed in the public domain, and noted by the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court.

The Committee also expressed serious concern and unequivocally condemned the recent terror attack in Delhi, extending heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. It said that in a civilised society, violence has no place, and such heinous acts must be dealt with firmly and decisively.

Expressing concern over the Nowgam blast, the Working Committee conveyed condolences to the affected families and stated that the incident must be investigated at the highest level with responsibility fixed for any deviation from standard operating procedure.

The Committee further expressed serious concern over reports of harassment faced by students, traders and residents of Jammu and Kashmir in different parts of the country. Strongly condemning their selective targeting in the aftermath of recent events, it emphasized that the people of Jammu and Kashmir cannot be stereotyped. The Working Committee called upon all state governments to ensure the safety, dignity and protection of the lives and property of Kashmiris and other residents of Jammu and Kashmir living or working across India, asserting that not every Kashmiri is a terrorist or a supporter of terror.

Reiterating its political commitments, the Working Committee also reaffirmed its unwavering resolve to fulfil all promises made in the party’s manifesto.

In its final resolution, the Working Committee unanimously reaffirmed its full support to the government led by Omar Abdullah and urged it to continue fulfilling the aspirations of the people and upholding their dignity.

It is important to note that a two day working committee of National Conference was convened by party president Dr Farooq Abdullah and was attended by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is also the party’s Vice-President, along with senior leaders including Mubarak Gul, Sakina Itoo, Hasnain Masoodi and other members of the Working Committee. The session began around 10 a.m. also saw attendance of Rajya Sabha members.
