Srinagar: More than 41 per cent of nutraceutical samples tested in Jammu and Kashmir over the past six months have failed to meet prescribed standards, prompting the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) to intensify inspections and launch a fresh enforcement drive across the Union Territory.

According to official figures released by the FDA on Tuesday, 136 out of 328 nutraceutical samples tested during the period were found non-conforming, registering a failure rate of 41.46 per cent.

The findings have placed the quality and regulatory compliance of health supplements under scrutiny, with authorities stepping up surveillance of businesses involved in the manufacture, storage, distribution and sale of these products.

As part of the latest enforcement drive, FDA officials conducted 168 inspections across Jammu and Kashmir and collected 146 fresh samples for laboratory examination. The samples will be tested for prescribed safety and quality parameters, besides checking compliance with mandatory labelling requirements under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and related regulations.

During the inspections, officials also detected seven labelling violations and recommended notices under the applicable provisions. Further action will depend on the nature of the violations and the relevant regulatory requirements.

Nutraceutical products, including dietary and nutritional supplements, are commonly marketed for health and wellness benefits. Their quality, composition and labelling are therefore important for consumers who rely on product claims while making purchasing decisions.

The FDA said the high rate of non-conformity during the preceding six months necessitated a fresh and intensive enforcement exercise across the Union Territory. The objective is to assess compliance with prescribed standards and initiate appropriate action wherever violations are established.

However, the administration has not disclosed the names of the brands or manufacturers whose samples failed the tests, the districts from which the samples were collected, or the specific parameters that were violated.

It also remains unclear how many samples failed due to deficiencies in composition, quality, safety parameters or labelling. Non-conformity does not automatically mean that every affected product was unsafe for consumption, as the nature and seriousness of violations may vary.

The FDA has advised Food Business Operators to ensure strict adherence to statutory requirements at every stage, from manufacturing and storage to distribution and retail sale. Businesses must also comply with mandatory declarations on product packaging and restrictions governing health-related claims.

The results of the 146 samples collected during the latest drive are awaited. The administration has not specified whether prosecutions, penalties, product recalls or other enforcement measures have already followed the earlier findings.

The fresh sampling exercise is expected to provide further information about compliance in the nutraceutical market and help authorities determine the next course of regulatory action.

With 41.46 per cent of the previously tested samples found non-conforming, the focus is now on the pending laboratory results and the action taken against businesses found violating prescribed standards.

For consumers in Jammu and Kashmir, the key concern remains whether nutritional supplements sold in the market consistently meet the quality, safety and labelling requirements intended to protect public health.
