Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti has launched a signature campaign advocating for a complete ban on alcohol in Jammu and Kashmir. Addressing the media outside the PDP office, Iltija emphasized the urgent need to combat the rising issue of alcohol and drug abuse, which she claimed is severely affecting the youth and families in the region.

Highlighting the social impact of substance abuse, Iltija said, “Drug addiction and alcohol consumption are spreading like wildfire in Jammu and Kashmir, destroying families and affecting the moral fabric of our society. This is not just a political issue but a social crisis that demands immediate attention.”
The campaign comes as PDP MLA Fayaz Mir prepares to introduce a bill in the upcoming Assembly session in March, seeking a complete prohibition on alcohol across the Union Territory. Iltija urged all political parties, including the National Conference, BJP, and Congress, to support the bill, stressing that the issue transcends political boundaries.
“Jammu and Kashmir is known as the ‘Valley of Saints.’ Alcohol has nothing to do with tourism. If states like Bihar, Gujarat, and Nagaland can be alcohol-free, why not J&K?” she asked.
Iltija also praised the Jammu and Kashmir Police for their efforts in spreading awareness about drug abuse and appealed to them to extend their focus to alcohol availability. She lauded the recent initiative by the Traders’ Association in Lal Chowk, who displayed hoardings urging tourists to respect local sensitivities.
The PDP urged the public to join the movement, saying, “We cannot wait for the government alone to act. This is a people’s movement. Say no to alcohol, say no to drugs, and help us protect the future of our youth.”
