SRINAGAR: In a stringent move to recover dues, the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) has disconnected the electricity connections of 2,430 consumers who defaulted on payments exceeding ₹5,000 for two or more months.
The action comes as part of KPDCL’s ongoing drive to address mounting arrears and encourage timely payments among consumers.

The power utility issued repeated notices to defaulters, urging them to clear outstanding bills to avoid disconnection. However, despite multiple reminders, these 2,430 consumers failed to settle their dues, forcing the department to take strict action. The disconnections have been carried out across residential, commercial, and industrial categories, KPDCL officials said.
A KPDCL official emphasized that timely bill payment is critical to maintaining uninterrupted power supply and ensuring infrastructure development. “Non-payment of dues disrupts the financial health of the power sector and affects service delivery. Consumers must understand their responsibility in this regard,” the official said.
Consumers whose connections have been severed can have their power supply restored upon clearing the outstanding dues, he said.
KPDCL has also urged consumers with unpaid bills nearing the two-month threshold to settle them promptly to avoid similar action
In addition to disconnections, KPDCL is working on modernizing its billing and collection system to improve efficiency and transparency. This includes the rollout of digital payment options and automated reminders for due dates, which are aimed at making it easier for consumers to stay on top of their payments, KPDCL officials said.
Residents and business owners are reminded that paying their bills on time not only ensures an uninterrupted power supply but also contributes to the overall stability of the region’s energy system, he said.
Adding that he said for those whose connections have been flagged, KPDCL has reiterated that paying the outstanding amount will ensure swift reconnection and restore services. The department also encourages consumers to reach out to their nearest office for assistance if required.
KPDCL official further said that not only that the department is also taking action power thefts and illegal hooking across the Kashmir. Several consumers have been penalized.
