Srinagar | September 8: Authorities at SKIMS Medical College, Bemina, have issued show-cause notices to medical interns participating in the ongoing strike, directing them to submit an explanation within 24 hours or face disciplinary action.
The college administration said the interns’ absence from duty had affected patient care and emergency services. The notice warned that failure to respond within the stipulated period would be treated as having no explanation, after which action could be taken under the applicable rules.
Medical interns from government medical and dental colleges across Jammu and Kashmir have been protesting since last Monday over their stipend. They are demanding an increase from the existing ₹12,300 per month to ₹30,000.
The administration cited National Medical Commission regulations, stating that prolonged absence from internship duties and participation in a strike could be treated as professional misconduct. Depending on the circumstances, disciplinary measures could include curtailment, temporary suspension or cancellation of the internship.
The notice also referred to affidavits submitted by interns when they joined their courses, under which they had agreed to follow institutional rules, maintain discipline and refrain from strikes or other forms of indiscipline.
