Srinagar, September 7: Veterinary students across Jammu and Kashmir held a peaceful protest on Monday, demanding an increase in their internship allowance.
The protest was organized by the Jammu & Kashmir Veterinary Students Association (JKVSA), representing students of SKUAST-Jammu and SKUAST-Kashmir. The students said they have been seeking a stipend revision for nearly three years.
At present, interns receive ₹6,000 per month for six months and ₹9,000 for the remaining six months. Students said a proposal to revise the allowance has been pending with the Finance Department since 2023.
JKVSA said veterinary interns in several other institutions receive much higher stipends, ranging from ₹11,000 to ₹23,500 per month.
The students said their internship involves clinical training, field work and emergency duties, and demanded a fair allowance in line with other institutions.
The protest comes amid similar stipend-related demonstrations by MBBS and BDS interns across Jammu and Kashmir.
