SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Government is implementing 90 projects worth ₹1,002.38 crore under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 to strengthen urban water supply, sewerage infrastructure and rejuvenate water bodies across the Union Territory. The projects aim to improve access to safe drinking water, enhance sanitation and promote sustainable urban development.

The details have been outlined in the Housing and Urban Development Department’s “Urban Insights” monthly newsletter for May 2026, which states that the approved outlay includes nearly ₹867 crore in Central assistance and covers 65 regional water supply projects, three sewerage and septage management projects and 22 water body rejuvenation works across Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the newsletter, all 22 water body rejuvenation projects have been completed, while several water supply schemes in towns such as Ramgarh, Batote, Akhnoor, Jourian, Bari Brahmana, Kunzar and Devsar have also been completed. Major projects in Jammu and Srinagar, including the Dal Lake pollution abatement project, Srinagar Extension Water Supply Scheme and the Udhampur Water Supply Scheme, are progressing toward completion.

The department said the mission will augment urban water supply by 104.64 million litres per day (MLD), with 57.635 MLD to be added in Kashmir Division and 47.05 MLD in Jammu Division. The programme also envisages laying more than 1,211 kilometres of water pipelines, constructing 47 elevated overhead tanks, 31 ground-level service reservoirs and 62 pumping stations to strengthen distribution networks.

According to the newsletter, the infrastructure created under AMRUT 2.0 is expected to improve water supply for more than 2.09 lakh existing urban households while extending over 64,663 new drinking water connections. It also highlights a ₹306.05-crore Dal Lake environmental restoration and pollution abatement project, preparation of GIS-based master plans for 25 Class-II towns, and the completion of all 22 urban water body rejuvenation projects.

The newsletter states that the mission is also focused on strengthening wastewater management infrastructure. Under the Jal Hi AMRIT (JHA) initiative, 14 modernisation projects with an investment of over ₹10.50 crore are being executed to upgrade treatment facilities through advanced technologies, SCADA-based monitoring systems and resource recovery practices.

It further notes that a major component of the programme is the ₹306.05-crore Dal Lake pollution abatement project, which includes the construction of a 30 MLD advanced sewage treatment plant and sewerage infrastructure aimed at reducing pollution in the lake while catering to the needs of more than two lakh future residents. According to the department, GIS-based master plans are being prepared for 25 Class-II towns to facilitate scientific, data-driven urban planning and guide future development. The department said the initiative is expected to support sustainable growth, improve infrastructure planning and strengthen urban governance across the Union Territory.

The newsletter also highlights community participation under the AMRUT MITRA initiative, under which women-led Self Help Groups have conducted more than 78,000 water quality tests in urban areas. The department said the initiative has helped improve water quality monitoring while encouraging greater public participation in safeguarding drinking water resources.

Besides water supply infrastructure, the mission envisages strengthening urban resilience through improved sewerage systems, restoration of water bodies and technology-driven service delivery. According to the department, the integrated approach is intended to create cleaner, healthier and more liveable cities while ensuring long-term water security for urban residents across Jammu and Kashmir.
