Jammu: In a major breakthrough in the investigation into the sensational Gandhi Nagar firing incident, Jammu Police have arrested a suspect from Nanak Nagar in connection with the attack on a Special Operations Group (SOG) team near Green Belt Park last month.
The arrested accused, identified as Ashutosh, has been booked in FIR No. 114/2026 registered at Police Station Gandhi Nagar under Sections 109, 191(3), and 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita besides Sections 3/25 of the Arms Act.
Police sources said a country-made pistol without any identification marks and a sharp-edged weapon were recovered from his possession during the investigation.
The arrest comes in the aftermath of the high-profile firing incident that rocked the Green Belt Park area of Gandhi Nagar on May 26. Acting on specific intelligence inputs about the movement of wanted gangster Happy Choudhary and his associates, teams of SOG and Gandhi Nagar Police laid a special naka near the Mini Market area.
According to police reports, the suspects were travelling in a Baleno car along with other gang members. After spotting the police naka, they allegedly rammed their vehicle into an SOG vehicle and opened fire on the police party in a bid to escape. Security personnel retaliated in self-defence, leading to a brief exchange of fire that triggered panic in the busy locality.
The accused managed to flee from the scene, prompting a massive search operation across Jammu city. The area was immediately cordoned off and additional reinforcements were rushed to the spot.
Investigators believe the arrested accused may have links with the notorious Goguli gang, which has been under the scanner of law enforcement agencies in connection with several violent crimes in the Jammu region. Reports had earlier identified Happy Choudhary alias Goguli as the prime target of the police operation launched at Green Belt Park.
Police officials said the arrest marks a significant development in the case and could help unravel the wider network involved in the firing incident. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other absconding members of the gang.
Police are examining the recovered weapon and collecting forensic and technical evidence to establish the role of the accused in the firing incident. Further arrests are expected as the investigation progresses.
The case remains under active investigation, with security agencies continuing their crackdown on organized criminal gangs operating in the Jammu region.
