New Delhi, May 22: Activist and former JNU leader Umar Khalid was on Friday granted temporary bail for three days by the Delhi High Court in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case so he could be with his mother during her medical treatment and surgery.
The relief was provided by a Division Bench of Justice Prathiba M. Singh and Justice Madhu Jain after Khalid requested short-term bail on compassionate grounds.
While allowing the plea, the court laid down strict conditions, directing Khalid to remain at a designated address and limiting his movement to the hospital where his mother is admitted. He has not been allowed to travel elsewhere during this period.
Khalid is currently facing charges under the UAPA in the larger conspiracy case related to the 2020 Delhi riots. He had approached the High Court after a sessions court turned down his earlier request seeking 15 days of interim bail.
The prosecution opposed the application, maintaining that other relatives were available to look after his mother and argued that the circumstances did not warrant temporary release.
After considering the medical situation, the High Court decided to grant him short-term relief with several restrictions in place.
