Ramban, May 2:A 22-year-old man from Ramban, who had been missing for nearly 20 days, was found dead on Saturday after allegedly jumping into a stream while trying to escape from suspected cow vigilantes, officials said.
The body was recovered from a stream near Digdool in the district. According to officials, the youth had gone missing on April 12 near the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway at Makarkoot after reportedly being intercepted and assaulted while travelling home from Jammu.
During the incident, he is believed to have jumped into the stream and could not be traced at the time. His body was discovered in a decomposed condition and later shifted to a hospital for legal formalities.
The deceased has been identified as Tanveer Ahmad Chopan, a resident of Mundkhal Pogal.
Police have registered a case and detained four individuals in connection with the matter. Senior Superintendent of Police Ramban has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a detailed probe.
The family has alleged that the assault and chase led to his death and has demanded strict action against those responsible.
