Srinagar: President of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, has reacted to recent developments in Pakistan regarding nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize, stating that humanitarian service should never be driven by the pursuit of awards or recognition.
Speaking to reporters, Dr. Abdullah said that the true responsibility of leaders and nations is to reduce suffering, promote peace, and support people affected by conflict rather than focus on gaining international accolades. He emphasized that peace-building and humanitarian efforts must remain the central objective.
His remarks came after a lawmaker from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (N) submitted a resolution in the Punjab Assembly nominating Field Marshal and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Asim Munir, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The resolution stated that Pakistan’s leadership demonstrated effective diplomacy during rising tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, which had threatened regional peace. It also noted that Pakistan is set to host talks between the United States and Iran aimed at consolidating a fragile ceasefire and preventing further escalation in West Asia.
Responding to the debate, Dr. Abdullah reiterated that genuine service to humanity should be guided by compassion and responsibility rather than the desire for prestigious honors, stressing that humanitarian work must always prioritize peace and the welfare of people affected by conflict.
