Srinagar: Amid rising uncertainty due to tensions in West Asia, Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Satish Sharma on Monday said the Union Territory currently has fuel and LPG stock sufficient for about 17 to 21 days, assuring the public that the government is closely monitoring the supply situation.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event in Srinagar, Sharma said the administration has maintained adequate reserves of essential commodities and is taking all necessary steps to ensure uninterrupted supply across Jammu and Kashmir.
“Stocks are available with us for around 17 to 21 days. Anyone found involved in hoarding or black-marketing—whether a petrol pump owner or LPG distributor—will face strict action, including cancellation of licences,” the minister said.
Sharma acknowledged that global developments have created concerns regarding supply chains but stressed that the government is keeping a close watch on the situation. He urged the public not to panic or indulge in unnecessary stockpiling of essential commodities.
“Some dishonest elements try to exploit such situations through hoarding and black-marketing. We will not tolerate it and strict action will be taken against those involved,” he warned.
The minister also said that although Jammu and Kashmir had earlier been declared a kerosene-free region, the government has decided to resume limited kerosene distribution as an additional support measure to ensure people do not face any inconvenience.
According to Sharma, he has been personally reviewing the situation and visiting several locations to assess ground realities. “I started touring from early morning and have visited multiple places to check the availability of essential supplies,” he said.
The minister reiterated that the administration under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is committed to ensuring that residents do not face shortages of fuel, LPG or other essential commodities.
Appealing for calm, Sharma said the public should avoid panic buying as the government is fully prepared to handle the situation. He expressed confidence that supply chains will remain stable and that Jammu and Kashmir will continue to function normally despite global uncertainties.
Sharma also expressed optimism about the region’s tourism prospects, stating that Kashmir, often referred to as the “Switzerland of India,” is expected to witness a record influx of tourists this year, which will further strengthen the local economy.
