Jammu: A relentless heatwave swept across Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, with Jammu city reeling under a blistering 44.3°C, nearly 5 degrees above normal, marking one of the hottest days of the season so far.
According to data from Kashmir Weather, an independent weather monitoring agency, Jammu recorded 44.3°C, which is 4.7°C higher than the seasonal average, while other districts in the region also endured punishing heat. Katra sizzled at 40.2°C, Batote reported 33.6°C — a sharp 5.5°C above normal, Banihal registered 32.8°C, and Bhaderwah logged 33.0°C, all significantly above their typical June temperatures.
The intense heatwave has prompted health warnings, with authorities advising residents to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, remain hydrated, and avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun.
In stark contrast, the Kashmir Valley, though cooler than Jammu, also experienced unseasonably high temperatures. Srinagar recorded 33.3°C, Qazigund topped the Valley at 33.6°C, while even tourist hotspots like Pahalgam (28.7°C) and Gulmarg (23.0°C) were warmer than usual. Kupwara and Kokernag touched 32.5°C and 30.8°C, respectively.
Leh (26.9°C) and Kargil (27.9°C) in Ladakh, meanwhile, remained relatively cooler.
Meteorologists warn that the current spell of intense heat may persist in the coming days, and have urged the public — especially children, the elderly, and outdoor workers — to take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
