Zojila,June 9: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday described the breakthrough of the Zojila Tunnel as a “historic milestone,” stating that it fulfills the long-standing demand for all-weather connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh .
Speaking at the ceremony, he congratulated the people of Ladakh and thanked Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and his team for advancing the project to a stage where year-round access is now close to reality.
He said the true impact of the tunnel will be reflected in the daily lives of local residents, especially students, patients, and traders, adding that it will bring transformative change to the region.
The Chief Minister expressed hope for the timely completion of the remaining work, calling the breakthrough the fulfilment of a long-pending regional aspiration.
He also reiterated the demand for improved air connectivity for Kargil , urging the Centre to consider regular flight services for the region.
“We have made sincere efforts but have not succeeded so far. I request Gadkari Sahib to help fulfil this demand of the people of Kargil,” he said, adding that better air connectivity would further boost development and integration.
