Srinagar: The 29 newly selected officers of the Jammu and Kashmir Police (Gazetted) Service were on Friday reminded that the police uniform carries immense responsibility, public trust and risks to life, as the government called upon them to help build a modern, professional and technology-enabled force.

Addressing the newly selected officers at Lok Bhavan in Srinagar, Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat congratulated them and cautioned that police service would bring difficult situations, including risks to their lives.

“Wearing the uniform is not easy. It comes with responsibility,” Prabhat said, adding that training would prepare the officers to face the challenges of policing.

He said the officers would receive professional training to develop the skills, confidence and preparedness required to discharge their duties. “There will be challenges with this responsibility and there will be a risk to your lives. But I hope that during your training, you will be made strong enough to face every situation,” he said.

Commissioner/Secretary, General Administration Department, M Raju said the officers were joining an institution with a “proud legacy” and had both an opportunity and responsibility to contribute to its transformation into a modern, professional, technology-enabled and citizen-centric force.

Raju said the appointment ceremony reflected the administration’s commitment to transparent governance, institutional integrity and merit-based recruitment. He appreciated the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission and other institutions involved in ensuring a rigorous selection process.

He said the government had in recent years been referring vacancies for competitive services to the JKPSC annually to create greater opportunities for the youth and improve efficiency in the police and civil administration.

Highlighting the changing nature of law enforcement, Raju said the police were required to tackle organised crime, economic offences, narco-terrorism and increasingly complex cybercrime, besides conventional security challenges.

He stressed the importance of technology-enabled and intelligence-driven policing, noting the role of platforms such as the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems in improving information sharing, integration and data-driven investigations across the criminal justice system.

Raju said the newly appointed officers would undergo foundational training at the Jammu and Kashmir Institute of Management, Public Administration and Rural Development, followed by specialised training in policing, law, tactics and operations at the Police Academy.

He said the structured training would equip them to operate in an increasingly complex security and administrative environment.

Emphasising the significance of the uniform, Raju said it represented not merely authority but the trust placed in police officers by the people. He urged the new officers to uphold the rule of law, protect the vulnerable, maintain public order and serve citizens with fairness and dignity.

He also called upon them to maintain high standards of integrity and professionalism while combining professional competence with sensitivity in their dealings with the public.

Prabhat said he would personally interact with the officers at the academy and wished them success as they embark on their careers in the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
