Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday caught two revenue officials red-handed, while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 70,000 here, an official said.
Patwari Shashi Kumar and his assistant, Harkeerat Singh, were trapped following a written complaint by a resident alleging that the officials had demanded an illegal gratification for issuing two ‘fards’ (revenue extracts), a spokesperson of the ACB said.
He said the ACB conducted a discreet verification of the complaint, which established a prima facie case of bribery.
Accordingly, an FIR was registered at the ACB Central police station, Jammu, under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and an investigation was initiated.
During the course of the investigation, the ACB laid a trap, and the accused were caught red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe amount of Rs 70,000 from the complainant, the spokesman said.
He said both accused were arrested on the spot, and the bribe money was recovered from their possession in the presence of independent witnesses associated with the trap team.
Following the arrests, searches were conducted at the residential premises of both accused in the presence of executive magistrates and further investigation into the case is in progress, the spokesman said.
