Zanskar, Sep 17: Two labourers were killed and three others injured after loose soil suddenly collapsed at a road construction site near Jingchan in Zanskar on Thursday, officials said.
The incident took place while the workers were engaged in the construction of a road leading to Ralakung village. The project is being carried out under the Roads and Buildings Department, Zanskar.
The sudden collapse trapped two labourers under the debris. Rescue teams from Zanskar Police Station and the Tungri Rescue Team, along with the CRPF and Indian Army, launched an operation to recover them.
After sustained rescue efforts, both workers were pulled out from beneath the debris. They were later identified as Abdul Hamid, 24, and Pawan Kumar, 26, both residents of Kishtwar.
Three other workers were injured in the incident and shifted to hospital for treatment. They were identified as Ghulam Mohd, 35, Omar Wani and Muneeb Bashir. All three are from Kishtwar, while Muneeb Bashir was reported to be in stable condition.
The five labourers were working under a Jammu and Kashmir-based contractor involved in the road construction project.
Police officials from the Leh jurisdiction also reached the site after the rescue operation. Further details about the incident are awaited.
